Jesse Jackson’s vulgar comment about “cutting Obama’s nuts off” has caused quite a stir in the media, and this part is self-explanatory. The 23/6 site however takes note of the fluster and “beautiful awkwardness” of saying the word “nuts” on cable television—which is actually quite entertaining.

Is France Incompatible with France?

The French paper Le Monde broke the story of France rejecting a Muslim woman by asking, “Is the burqa incompatible with French citizenship?” France claims to be a secular state, but the latest ruling against a burqa-clad Moroccan woman who was denied French citizenship because of her “total submission” to her husband and “radical practice of her religion, incompatible with essential values of the French community, particularly the principle of equality of the sexes” infers that France does not even know what secularism means. I am not a fan of the burqa, but the state’s interference with private behavior ironically resembles something that would happen in Saudi Arabia—only on the other end of the ideological spectrum. Nevertheless, this is not new to France. In fact, it only discloses other sacred “French values” like bigotry and xenophobia. Apparently, one aspect that is considered in granting French citizenship is assimilation which supposedly “normally focuses on how well the candidate speaks French.” I forgot, is this the same country that persecuted Jews on the basis of their “inability to assimilate” too?
Additionally, if gender equality is a qualification for French citizenship, then I suggest France kick out every last perpetrator and victim of sexism in the country. One law professor even retorts, “If you follow that to its logical conclusion, it means that women whose partners beat them are also not worthy of being French.” This will probably only leave behind the gays in France, and they will most likely make it a better country.
